NEW GU WEB SITE

Good morning! Graceland now has a new web design which means there are new page addresses; however the home Graceland page is still at:
http://www.graceland.edu .  We will work on getting all of our links corrected in this blog to the new Graceland pages as quickly as possible, but in the meantime, you can go straight to the Grabske Library (Independence Campus)  at:  http://www.graceland.edu/academics/GrabskeLibrary
or to the F.M. Smith Library (Lamoni Campus) at http://www.graceland.edu/academics/library.  --TR

Out with the old --

In with the NEW

Happy New Year, everyone.

In keeping with this theme, I am going to report
some database changes you will be glad to know about.

  1. The "Education Full Text" database by Wilson Web is out.   IN is Education Research Complete  (access to thousands of journals, book, monographs and research papers in the field of education).  It even includes some nursing education information.  A link will be added to the Grabske (Independence Campus) Library site very soon, but in the meantime you can find it at the Lamoni Campus periodicals page -- near the top of the page, by clicking on EBSCOhost (which gives you a one-page listing of all the EBSCO databases we have at once).
  2. We formerly subscribed to the Cochrane Database via Wiley, but on January 1 we now are getting it via Ovid.  When you click on the Cochrane Library link from the Grabske Library page, several EBM site links will be listed.  I did some checking and the one that is listed second from the bottom EBM Reviews Full Text, seems to have the full-text articles.
We are at your service for library questions and requests.

Good luck and best wishes as you begin another calendar year of classes at GU. --TR

EBSCO DATABASES ARE BACK IN BUSINESS

It appears that the EBSCO request function ("Request this item by interlibrary loan") is fixed and the ezproxy is working as it should be. So please resume your previous request methods, and remember the databases login (except for PubMed) is your GU ID number and password is your last name in lower-case letters, or if you have Graceland email you can log in with your Graceland email username and password.

Please report to us if you are experiencing any problems.

Thank you for your patience while the Graceland server problems were corrected. --TR

THANKSGIVING
for contemporary students

Thanks for the minds that invented databases.
Thanks for instant access to so much information to help us learn and grow.
Thanks for teachers to teach and students who learn and also teach.
Thanks for computers to type our papers.
Thanks for the internet to keep us in touch.
Thanks for people who have gone before who have done and continue to do research.
Thanks for publishers who have made the research available in printed form to the world.
Thanks for the stimulation of our minds through education.
Thanks for those that go beyond the printed page to make us feel learning in personal and special ways.
Thanks for a country where we can enjoy the freedom of learning.
Thanks for much, much more -- this is just the beginning of our gratitude.
Amen.

The library will be closed on Thursday 27 November and Friday 28 November in observance of the holiday.  We will get busy with your requests again on Monday 1 December.

Best wishes to all for special Thanksgiving celebrations with family and friends. --Lee & Twila

SPOTLIGHT ON:

Grabske Library Nursing Resources page

Lee has compiled a list of very handy links to some important sites for nursing students and faculty.  You can find it at the Grabske Library web page and listed as Nursing Resources in the left yellow column.

In this list are three categories:
  • General reference (which includes a link regarding resolving compatability issues with Microsoft Office 2007)
  • General Medical Reference sources, including APA format link, medical dictionary, drug references, etc.
  • Nursing Organizations, from ANA to NLN and others
Though Googling is good, it may save you some search time to know these resource links are already collected and right under your Graceland nose!--TR

A Halloween Trick for You!

To celebrate the season, we are giving you our 2nd trick (see the first one) since our blog began.

Scenario:  You've got a partial or full medical/nursing citation (this will work IF the citation is indexed in PubMed) that you want to verify or see if there is a Grab It! Full Text button for it.

Go to our GU PubMed web address, and click on "Single Citation Matcher" in the left blue column. You will be given a screen with multiple boxes which you can use to enter bits and pieces (less is more) of your citation so that you can come up with the full one.

Let's try some "reaping" and I will give you a few pieces of information to put into the Citation Matcher slots and see what "surprise article" you will find.... :)

Date = 1989
Volume = 15
Issue = 3
First Page = 280
Then click the "Go" button

The Single Citation Matcher is a handy tool, is it not???

Pictured here are Grabske Librarians (Twila and Lee) with our beloved skeleton who is dressed up for the season.  Don't you just love "his" smile???!!!--TR

Uh Oh..... resolved

Now it seems the Blackwell journals are all migrated into Wiley and the links seem to be working, both at the Graceland Online Journals web page, and also in PubMed. (For previous post about this go here.)

If you are searching in PubMed AT HOME, and you do come across these journals via the Grab It! Full Text buttons, here is what you need to do to access Wiley journals:
  1. Click on the Grab It! Full Text button.
  2. You get a Wiley screen with article listed--look for "Login" at the upper right of the screen, and click on it
  3. Next screen: click on "institutional login" - upper right of the screen
  4. Log in with the Grab It username & password.
  5. Once logged in, go back (using your browser back key) to Wiley page with article.
  6. Finally, look for and click on "pdf" which will take you to the full-text article.
ON CAMPUS - If you come across Wiley journals via the Grab It! Full Text buttons in PubMed on a Graceland computer, you just click on the Grab It button, then the Wiley page will come up with your article listed. Look for "pdf" and click on it and the article should come right up.

For a full listing of Wiley (formerly Blackwell) journals, go here. --TR
